Common Medical Causes Of Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep issue where a person has difficulty in falling and staying asleep. There are both psychological and medical causes of insomnia which result in a lack of sleep. While the psychological factors that contribute to insomnia are plentiful, the medical causes of insomnia may actually be limited.

Medications Can Cause Insomnia

One of the medical causes of insomnia are medications and drugs which may b prescribed to the individual and even over the counter drugs, which the individual takes. Medication can be one of the causes of insomnia in children as well as adults. Medication or drugs which contain nicotine may result in insomnia in certain individuals. Antidepressants, beta blockers and beta agonists can also be the medical causes of insomnia for some people. The ingestion of drugs and prescribed medication affects people differently. This means not everybody reacts the same way to the drug or medication, which implies that insomnia may or may not occur to those who take the same drug or medication.

Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions have also been pinpointed as some of the medical causes of insomnia in people. These medical conditions include hyperthyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, allergies, asthma, hypertension, arthritis and heart disease. Of course, some medical causes of insomnia will also include the onset of pain and discomfort caused by injuries and other conditions which manifest pain or discomfort in the person. A tingling sensation, not necessarily painful can also keep the individual from getting a good night’s sleep.

Sleep apnea is also another of the many different medical causes of insomnia. Sleep apnea is a condition or breathing disorder which is characterized by a short cessasion of an individual’s breathing during sleep. When this occurs, the body will gasp for breath and as a result, the person may awake. Another of the medical causes of insomnia is known as restless leg syndrome. Sleep apnea is a condition or breathing disorder which is characterized by a short cessasion of an individual’s breathing during sleep.

These medical causes of insomnia are not as many as the psychological causes. The medical causes of insomnia may be easier to deal with than the psychological causes of the sleep disorder. But the medical causes of insomnia in certain instances may also be difficult to correct as the underlying reason or issue must be addressed before the person may be cured.
